The Strathmore University women’s basketball team, Swords began in 2006 under the supervision of Tony Ochieng’, the current men’s basketball team coach. Then it had five players, but over the years it has grown tremendously under the stewardship of the then coach, Sylvia Kamau and now boast of 26 players, both students, and alumni. When the club began, the players could hardly compose a team, leave alone play competitively…
The then underdogs emerged top in the National Basketball Association league in 2007, a year after its conception. They went on to become second runners-up in the premier league in 2009 and have defended the KUSA league title since 2012.
In 2014 they finished 2nd in the East African University games.
1n 2017, they won the KUSA national championships in Kakamega and proceeded to East African games where they came in second after UCU Uganda.
In December last year, they finished third in the national KUSA games in Nyeri after a spirited fight against USIU and University of Nairobi.
Currently, the team ranks at 1st place in the division one league and fourth in the premier league after veteran clubs KPA, Equity, and Storms. This was an improvement from the previous season’s 3rd and 5th place respectively.
The team is set to compete in Tanzania in the East Africa games in December.
